Kapitan khlebnikov Visual Artist Residencies

Cruise: KLB102507 BETTINA KAISIER - Australia / Germany. This will be Bettina's second artist residency with Quark, who works as a visual artist and designer in Australia. She grew up in Hamburg, Germany, where she earned her Masters in Illustration and Visual Communication. Approximately 7 years ago she chose to live and work by the Pacific and migrated to Australia, where she attained her Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts. In early 2007 Bettina had her first encounters with Antarctica – accompanying two expedition cruises to the peninsula. Sketches and paintings taken “en plein-air” led to a series of icescapes in oil on board that are highlighting space and shapes of this pristine environment. www.bettinakaiser.info




KLB110607 SHARRON SCHAFFER - USA Sharon K. Schafer has a diversified background with skills ranging from wildlife biologist, naturalist, photographer, writer, illustrator and river guide. She has worked as a field biologist, interpretive naturalist, hike leader and illustrator and before founding Skydance Studio. Now as a self-employed artist, she combines two loves - nature and art. Her curiosity and depth of knowledge are reflected in her beautifully artistic yet scientifically accurate paintings and photographs that are sold throughout the west. Her passion for the natural world has lead her to the ends of the earth, where she has spent 45 days as an artist-in residence for Quark Expeditions in the Antarctic. Schafer has developed natural-resource-related educational exhibits and images for the US National Park Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service, among others. In addition, she has taught art and nature related classes throughout United States. Schafer’s work is represented in the collections of President George Bush, Senator Harry Reed, and the Howard Hughes Corporation among others. http://skydancestudio.com/

KLB111807 MARIA CORYELL-MARTIN -USA. Expeditionary Artist Maria Coryell-Martin (Seattle, WA) paints polar and glaciated regions around the world, working with scientists and local communities to witness and record climate change. Coryell-Martin has painted in Antarctica, Greenland, and SE Alaska, following the tradition of artists such as Emily Carr in British Columbia and Edward Wilson in Antarctica, Through art, she seeks to raise awareness and appreciation for the role of ice worldwide. In the field, Coryell-Martin paints with ink, watercolor and gouache media to build her palette of place: a vocabulary of color, climate, and stories. Home in the studio, she develops her field work with oil and watercolor media to share with the public through exhibits, presentations, and workshops. Coryell-Martin's project, "Portraits of Ice, Witnessing Climate Change through Art," is formally recognized by the International Polar Year as project #1182 www.expeditionaryart.com




KLB113007 DAVID MCEOWN - Canada. David McEown has traveled in both the Arctic and Antarcic as artist in reisdenc with Quark.David has traveled widely to experience and paint some of this earth's most dynamic and sacred landscapes. Many paintings have been inspired by such places as the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica, the ancient temperate rainforest of British Columbia's west coast and northern Ontario's vast wilderness. Represented in many public and corporate collections, David has received several awards for recognition of his unique large-scale watercolours. These paintings depict the cycles of life and our own relationship within nature. David is currently a director of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Through his teaching of painting at the Royal Ontario Museum, as well as many other venues, David hopes to share his passion - to celebrate and bring an awareness of our diverse yet fragile natural heritage. www.artistjourneys.com




Lyubov Orlova Visual Artist Residencies:

Cruise: ORL111007 & ORL112007 Artist: LEEANNA GOLDSMITH - Australia. Leeanna is a visual artist from Australia who had a very successful run of three residencies onboard Sarpik last season in 2007 and in 2006. She is currently undergoing Zodiak training in Sydney and is about to exhibit her paintings and drawings in the International Polar Year Exhibition in Hobart this June 2007.

Cruise: ORL113007 Camille Seaman - USA. This will be Camille's first artist residency with Quark, however she has run workshops in Antarctica before. Camille Seaman (b.1969) is a photographer living in Berkeley, California. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions in New York and California. Her Award winning photographs are in private collections in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. She has self-published numerous books of her work and co-founded Fastback Creative Books enabling other photographers to self publish their work. Seaman has spoken at seminars and taught workshops in New York, California and Antarctica. She acts as curator for Gallery FCB. Camille has traveled extensively all over the world and continues to explore with her camera. http://www.camilleseaman.com

Cruise: ORL121007 GREGORY WILLIAM FRUX - USA. This will be Gregory's first artist residency with Quark and his first visit to Antarctica. Brooklyn-based artist Frux documents and celebrates the life of his city in oil paintings & drawings. His work has earned recognition from such diverse organizations as Brooklyn Arts Council, The Library of Congress, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the National Park Service. Besides his urban work, Greg has been inspired by his time in the wilderness. His travel adventures have become sources for his art. http://www.frux.net/

Cruise: ORL122807 JUILEE PRYOR - Australia. This will be Juilee's first artist residency with Quark. Juilee currently is the technical assistant for photography at the University of Wollongong and painting at TAFE. She has been working on her Antarctic inspired series of paintings and photographs for 5 years now and is about to exhibit her paintings and drawings in the International Polar Year Exhibition in Hobart this June 2007. Juliee is completing her post graduate study at the university of Wollongong.

Cruise: ORL011508 PAUL BELL - Australia. In February of 2007 Paul was the media artist aboard Lybov Orlova. He held several viewing sessions which were well attended and answered questions on documentary film making and different camera techniques. He is currently editing his video footage into "Antarctica Uncovered " for broadcast on Lonely Planet TV.

Cruise: ORL020208 COLIN PALETHORPE - Australia. artists/colinpalethorpe/colin.html This will be Colin's first artist residency with Quark. Colin Palethorpe’s present art focus is the exploration of form in the landscape and the contrasting man-made and geological/natural forces which combine to sculpt that form. Being raised on a farm and subsequently educated as a geologist, the landscape and its various interpretations (including the political battleground) can’t help but inform Colin’s work. In 1998 Colin took up painting as a watercolourist and in 2003 he enrolled in the Melbourne CAE Diploma of Visual Art which was completed in 2005 with high distinctions in drawing, print making and painting. In October 2005 he took up a full-time studio within Appleton Street Studios, Richmond, Victoria. http://www.appletonstreetstudios.com/

Cruise: ORL021108 JANE MILLOY - UK. This will be Jane's first artist residency with Quark. A graduate of Glasgow School of art, her passions in are the natural world, and drawing and painting. Being able to combine them for a living is a privilege that Jane never takes for granted. A dedicated conservationist and an active member of the Scottish Raptor Study Group, living in the beautiful north east of Scotland, her time is spent in the field and the studio; drawing and painting wildlife subjects. www.janemilloy.co.uk

Cruise: ORL022008 MEEGAN PARKEE - Australia. This will be Meegan's second artist residency and her third trip to Antarctica. Meegan lives in Sydney and has spent the first 13 years as a graphic designer. The last 8 as a Senior Creative Designer for a promotions company in Sydney. Cruise: ORL030108 GREER TAYLOR - Australia. This will be Greer Taylor's first artist residency with Quark. Greer has worked in the visual arts for most of her working life, initially as a fashion designer and then as a textile artist specialising in the making of “art clothes”. Her textile work has been exhibited in many venues in Australia and overseas, she has been awarded many prizes and has works in a number of Regional Gallery collections. She also applied her garment making interest to costume making, producing costumes for a number of theatrical productions. In 1992 Greer spent 3 months as Artist in Residence at the Jakarta Art Institute’s textile department.More recently after training and working as a graphic and web site designer, Greer perused her interest in painting and sculpture. In late 2006 she mounted a solo exhibition in her home town of Wollongong, she is currently working towards an exhibition in Sydney 2008. Her work has been exhibited in galleries around Australia.

Cruise: KLB111807 John de la Roche - Australia. John has been a commercial photographer for over 20 years. Specialising in location work in the fields of corporate, tourism, industrial, advertising & editorial photography. He has always had a keen interest in landscape photography and has recently begun to concentrate on more personal projects dealing with peoples relationship with the landscape which he sees as more meaningful than the pristine, unpopulated environment.

Cruise: KLB113007 DAISY GILARDINI -Switzerland / Italy Daisy Gilardini is based in Lugano – Ticino, the sunshine state of Switzerland. She started taking photography seriously during her first trip to India in 1989 and since then has visited more than 55 countries with camera in hand. She fell in love with Antarctica during her first trip there in 1997 and since then she has regularly visited the polar regions; a passion that has become her specialty. By 1999 she was selling her photography. Her work has been published in some of the best magazines in Europe such as The Sunday Times, Animan, The Telegraph, Outdoor Photography and Airone, and in the United States she has worked for Smithsonian Magazine, Nature’s Best Magazine, and National Wildlife federation. Daisy’s work is regularly used for calendars, postcards and puzzles. Some of her images have been awarded at the most prestigious international photo contests as the “BBC Wildlife photographer of the year”, the American “Nature’s Best” and the “Travel Photography of the Year”. www.daisygilardini.com
