Robert Howe

Being asked to contribute to this Antarctic Project has provided me with a wonderful opportunity to continue an exploration of landscape painting, albeit in a different light compared to what I am used to; having grown up around coastal New South Wales.

When I started working on this series I envisioned a body of work somehow more figurative and representational that what I have in fact come up with. I eventually came to the conclusion that the most important thing I should be concerned about was honesty in my relationship with nature and with painting. My paintings have always been foremost about the act of painting itself: the meditative qualities of the practise. And I found that for me the most logical and natural way to interpret my impression of this environment is through a somewhat abstract and minimalist approach. I have always lived by the ocean, and have always sensed some sort of spiritual connection to the sea. I constantly found myself drawn to the simple yet infinite nature of the horizon line. The Antarctic blues, the ice, and the sheer scale of the region has always fascinated and intrigued me.

Listening to music is an integral part of the painting process for me, and for this body of work I’ve used the sounds of artists such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, in particular their interpretation of the blues.
